Chapter 15

After having a quick shower, Cassie felt much more relaxed.

She walked toward the gate that separated her and Tessa’s house and heard a scratching noise. She looked toward the sound and saw Harry trying to dig under the fence.

“Not again, Harry.” Cassie laughed as she shooed him away from the fence toward the back porch of Tessa’s house. “I missed you, too, buddy, but you have to stop digging under the fence to try get to me.”

Cassie opened Tessa’s back door and Harry ran inside.

Tessa was at her kitchen table. As Cassie walked in, she ended her call.

“Perfect timing.” Tessa smiled as she put down her phone.

“Did you find out anything?”

“Lots! They were able to retrieve the bullet, and should be able to match it to the weapon it was fired from, but in order to do that, they have to find the weapon, which they haven’t yet.” Tessa patted Harry’s head. He was sitting in front of her staring at her as if he wanted something. “Joe was alone at the park at the time of the shooting, and he claims to have heard the gunshot, but what if he’s the one who pulled the trigger?”

“Good point.” Cassie sat down at the table. “Do you think Joe did it?”

“I’m not sure, I’m just not sure how it all fits together. Yes, Joe and Duke didn’t get along. Duke was rude to him, but would that really be enough to drive Joe to kill? From what I’ve managed to find, he has no history of violence, at least none that I can find. No criminal record.”

“But that doesn’t mean he didn’t do it.”

“Exactly. Let’s go out the back and throw the ball to Harry while I tell you the rest.” Tessa grabbed the ball and Harry followed after her. “He’s restless.”

“Okay.” Cassie followed behind them.

“I was also able to get the number that called Duke’s phone straight after the competition. But it isn’t listed, so I don’t know who it belongs to.” Tessa threw the ball and Harry ran after it. He came back with it in his mouth and dropped it by Cassie’s feet.

“My turn.” Cassie threw the ball and Harry ran straight past it to the goats. “Did you look up the number?”

“Not yet.” Tessa gestured to Harry who was chasing the goats. “He’s lost interest already.”

“He has.” Cassie laughed. “Anything else?”

“Joe arrived the earliest that morning. He claims he was there for about forty minutes before anyone else arrived.” Tessa started up the steps. “Which of course actually means that he could have arrived at that field at any time. No one saw him leave the inn, no one saw him arrive at the field. From what I can tell, he could have been there for hours planning Duke’s murder and shot him shortly before anyone else was expected to arrive.”

“So, he could have done it.” Cassie followed after her. “Maybe Duke was there, setting up, and Joe arrived. They argued about something.” She glanced at Tessa.
